squirrels

I love them.  I think that squirrels are very intelligent creatures- possibly more intelligent than many humans.  This is why.

Everything most animals do can be explained- they run to find prey, they sleep to get rest, they walk in your yard because they don't have anywhere else to go, etc.  But squirrels are different.  Squirrels chase each other, excessively.  I sometimes just sit on my couch in my living room and watch the squirrels run after each other, but it's without purpose. I swear to god they're playing tag.  But the other smart thing about squirrels is that they have outsmarted most humans- no one really sees this pointless game of tag as anything important, but it must be.  They have been getting away with doing something odd for wild animals- enjoying themselves.

Humans do rule this planet but seriously how dumb are we to believe that we are the most intelligent- by what standards?  It seems very convenient that we are the most intelligent by the standards we created ourselves.   Who is to say that squirrels aren't more intelligent by their own standards than humans are.  Let's be honest, by a squirrels standards, we probably look pretty stupid.  We live in excess, staring at screens all day destroying the planet that nurtures us.  How, by any standards, is that what intelligence should be.  We should take it back to days when we were more like animals than we are something else, and judge ourselves based on that.  We are no better than the animals upon which we feed.  We are no better than our ancestors of thousands of years.  We are certainly no better than the squirrels.
